Regulator
Introduction
Care and cleaning
Introduction
The regulator is what allows the diver to breathe air
from the tank at ambient pressure, which is supplied in a
smooth constant manner according to the diver’s needs.
The regulator is made up of two components:
The first stage is fixed to the air tank and has high pressure
and medium pressure chambers.
The main function of this component is breaking down the high
air pressure coming from the dive tank before it goes on to
the second component to an intermediate pressure, so that
it reaches this second component at a pressure of between
7 and 10 atm.
There are various connection fittings to be found on this
component to connect devices of high pressure such as content
gauge or for example a second spare stage.
The second stage of the regulator stores the air at room pressure
in a chamber. This is the air then breathed by the diver.
It is made up of a block (generally metal, although plastic
is also used) with a mouth piece, air expulsion orifices and
a purge button.
Given the importance of this piece of equipment, it is mandatory
to keep a spare regulator on hand on all dives.
Care and cleaning
Some aspects to keep in mind regarding the regulator’s
care and clearing:
1. Not forgetting to place the cap on the first component
to avoid water filtering in.
2. Not cleaning it with a pressurized spray of water, instead
gently placing it under sweet water.
3. Not pressing the purge button given that this opens the
valve of the second component and can allow water to filter
into the first component.
4. Taking special care not to bend or force any hoses.
5. Keeping it in a shady place.
6. Having it checked by a specialist at least once a month
in order to avoid accidents.
